Backpacking Campout at Sleeping Bear Dunes

Posted on Jul 2 2010 - 12:43am
It was a dark and stormy night...... In Troop 1701 style, we arrived at our campsite after dark, and for added interest, there was rain. The walk-in site was very cool!  The trek to our site was a only a few hundred yards from the car, but seemed very remote.  Dane rallied Jash and Jake, camp was set up and a good night's sleep was had by all.

Saturday morning arrived misty, but no more rain. Saturday breakfast was pancakes and sausage.  The crew did an excellent job in preparation, as the pancakes came out beautifully golden brown.  (What do you think guys, are you going to recommend pancakes for our next backpacking trip?)

After breakfast, we broke camp and organized the gear for our trek.  We hiked along the Lake Michigan dunes headed for our backcountry site. The weather was perfect ... not too hot and not too sunny. The views of Lake Michigan and the dunes were great!  See the islands hiding in the mist in the pictures? Two minutes before those pictures were taken, you could see the islands clearly! We literally watched the mist roll in off the lake.

We arrived at the campsite early Saturday afternoon.  The crew set up camp and pitched the dining fly.  Lake Michigan was about a half mile away, so we trekked there and used our water filter to fill several bottles of water for the evening.  Dinner Saturday night was Chicken Alfredo Mashed Potatoes.... this was very good! After watching the assembly process, the assistant scoutmaster was pleasantly surprised!

Unfortunately, rain returned in the late afternoon, and we had to call off the snipe hunt.  Snipes do not like rain.
