Webelos Weekend 2014 - Being Crafty, Fire Building/Safety, Movies, Magic & Pumpkin Pie

Seven Boy Scouts and 7 Troop Leaders hosted a bunch a Webelos Scouts this past weekend up at D-bar-A Scout Ranch in Metamora.  There were 17 Webelos and their parents that spent Saturday, one night, or both nights with us.  Kudos to Mrs Williams on getting the word out!

This year, we spent the weekend in the Trout Lake cabin, and had plenty of space to move around.  It was a nice change from last year when we were elbow to elbow - especially during the day.

Webelos Weekend Campout a success!

The Troop hosted Webelos I & II Scouts from Packs 1095 & 1712 this past weekend during our annual event in the Hilltop cabin at D-bar-A Scout Ranch.  Activities included Horseback Riding, BB Gun Shooting, and working on the Outdoorsman Activity Badge, including knot-tying, learning to build a fire, followed by a campfire with skits.  The Horseback Riding, something new this year for us, was a big winner, with 28 people participating, including one visitor from Shanghai.  We also had time for two movie nights (The Pink Panther - Steve Martin's version, and Monty Python & the Holy Grail) on the Troop's "Big Movie Screen".

The weekend started out cold with some snow and ice on the ground.  The temperatures steadily rose until we departed Sunday morning, when we had a nice layer of mud on the ground!  It would have been a Winter Wonderland if it was a few degrees colder, but that didn't stop the boys from tossing the snow back and forth and creating snow forts!

The boys (and a few parents) went through large quantities of Hot Chocolate over the weekend, and Mr Carter prepared mounds of his famous Popcorn for the movies.  There was a wide variety of healthy (and some not so healthy) foods available for the boys, and boy did they go through it!

The good news, no trailer issues in the mud on Sunday.  The not-so-good news, the trailer got stuck coming in Friday night and needed the help of one of our Webelos father's to get it up the last hill.  Four Wheel Drive is a great inovation!

The Troop had a great time hosting the Webelos and their parents and hope to see them again at a future Campout or Troop Meeting!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back scouts! It’s been a long summer and we’re all pretty out of practice but we can get back to our scout duties now. We welcome our new scouts to our humble group of troop 1701. We have to scout out new campouts for this year, which will happen during our next meeting, September 12. Popcorn is really popping up everywhere this time of year, so we should get to selling it ASAP before everyone is stalked up on it! well , thanks for reading this and we hope to see you at the next meeting!   - Gavin V, Webmaster

What to bring for campouts...

I took a look through a list that someone provided, then looked through mine (Mr Godfrey's), and decided that there was A LOT missing from that first list (so I removed THAT list).  I found what looks like a pretty complete list at another Troop's website, http://www.t652.com/wp-content/uploads/what_to_bring_on_a_campout.pdf (this is just an EXAMPLE of what I found).  But then I spent a little time checking the Boy Scout Handbook and guess what I found?  Starting on page 292, there is a "Personal Camping Checklist" that provides a good overview as well.  Other elements are in different areas of your Boy Scout Handbook - so get familiar with it!

Clearly, these guys had a very busy weekend at the Order of the Arrow (OA) Section Conclave last weekend at Gerber Scout Reservation in Twin Lake, MI.
This is what happens on the way home when Scouts have "too much fun!"
